random thoughts

"If we're going to have borders and we're going to allow capital to move freely between borders, and we're going to allow products to move freely between borders, but we're going to keep labor chained to the country of origin, then what we're doing is inherently . . . redistributing wealth dramatically from labor to capital. So . . . if you're going to chain [down] labor, you've got to chain [down] the rest. You can't have capitalists running around the globe, making money, making billions of dollars, but labor can't go where they can get the highest wage? That's insane. That's socialism for the rich and it's the market for everybody else." -- Tim Wise

Not all products move freely between borders. I can't get a seal skin sporran to wear with my kilt because the US doesn't permit importation of seal skin. Also, the definition of "freely", does that mean without cost or the products moving without physical impedence? Trade tarriffs don't sound like free movement of products.

Moreover, labor isn't chained to a particular country, ask anyone whose job has been outsourced. Companies are going to send jobs where the labor is cheapest whenever possible . Levi jeans sent jobs to Mexico, tech support went to India. That's where the highest wages are available for those jobs, because those jobs don't exist here anymore.

there are VERY high "Anti Dumping Laws" (Fancy name for tarifs and quality control) in the EU to protect the Italian and French bike makers from the very cheap bikes being made in Asia.
