Is this the begignning of "Big Brother"?

Like any major corporation, the Pentagon's information technology team needs to protect the bandwidth of its computer networks. That is why it said that as of today, it is restricting military computer access to big video sites like MySpace and YouTube that require a lot of bandwidth and strain the Defense Department's network of 5 million computers.

---What do you think,is this the Govt out of control again or do they have a legitimate reason to block the use of sites like Youtube and Myspace during work hours and at The Pentagon?---

Private companies, like the one I work for, have policies very similar to this. As far as the company sees it, if it's not work related there's no legitimate reason for me to be using company resources on it.

Do you want your tax dollars going to some guys sitting around watching youtube? I'm surprised this is only happening now. I would have expected this a long time ago.

Now I realize, and am guilty of, visiting non-work related websites during work hours if it is slow. Of course I steer clear of the adult only content as people have been fired for stuff like that.

I was under the impression that the military was concerned about the amount of traffic (bandwidth)on its system being devoted to these two sites. I would be surprised if they were looking to police the surfing habits of off duty personnel for reasons other than logistical ones. at least that is what I heard.

Yeah, thats the original story scott, but I was just curious if anyone saw more than that here.

the way I read it was computers tasked to military purposes, not computers used by military personell during their off duty time. I was envisioning a bunch of guys sitting around some offices in the pentagon watchin some guy getting hit in the crotch on YouTube. If they are restricting access of off duty soldiers then I find it unfortunate and didn't mean to sound like such a douchebag.

Its OK to sound like a douchebag every now and again Mike, I do it here all the time and I dont care.
