McGreevy’s is now a Walgreen’s

For me this is just another of life’s ever changing curiosities. McGreevy’s a teen dance club that has long since gone out of business. Was for many years a nostalgic place to drive buy when in the neighborhood. Years after McGreevy’s shut it’s doors the building was occupied by a Russian Disco with a huge creepy black and white disco sign on the roof. That business failed as well and the building lay vacant for many more years still retaining its large black and white sign.

I liked the seedy looking old Russian disco sign, for me it gave my nostalgia a darker more edgy relationship with its past. I felt good that not all of my past has been gobbled up and erased by corporate good do’ers. Then about a month ago I passed by and noticed the Walgreen’s. And while the new resident of this property is likely a welcome one in the community, I found my self in a small way disappointed if for no other reason than my own selfish desires for nostalgia.

Wow. It looks NOTHING like it did. At all and it is kinda sad, but what can you do? Places, just like things can and do change.

I'm not gonna lie to you boyos. I wouldn't be able to find this location on a map. It was to long ago. I remember the sacred square though....
and that the punk room came first... I think

Ok, back to the square...I remember right before they closed the place down they had closed the "punk room" and placed everyone in the big dance room off to the left when you walked in. The punks had been put in with the house music people. If I remember right, the Sacred Square was a piece of carpet from the punk room that had been brought into the other room and we held it as something special. I think they took some of the carpet from the punk room and taped it to the floor in the main dance room. It became a sacred square of carpeting.

Am I right?

Wasn’t it just a piece of ductape on the floor, per some construction work..? I thought John T started the sacred part? He was the one who would just stop what he was doing a point at nothing on the ceiling, and then we would all join him.

I had TOTALLY forgotten about the Sacred Square! Thanks so much for reminding me! :)

I have another McGreevy's memory I'd like to share. My brother Jon used to frequent the place until he was old enough to get into Late Night at Medusa's. Apparently he was well received at McGreevy's because someone had written on the wall of one of the bathroom stalls "Bondelli is a babe." I was freaking out when I read it because it was so weird to see my last name scrawled on the wall. I remember telling Jon about it and he totally didn't believe me but we still had a good laugh about it anyway. Damn do I miss him and McGreevy's...

As Mike Ness once said in a very good song....

"The pool hall I loved as a kid, is now a 7-11....."
