Denny's and The Offmen

Denny’s was our kitchen away from our homes. It was our conference center. It was our hang out for late night antics. Denny’s was just one of those places we could always turn to for a cup of coffee and if I remember right, their coffee was dangerously addictive. It was also a warm shelter in the winter or a place to meet up for our Sunday night weekly meetings. Now that I look back, its funny to think about what a huge staple Denny’s was in our lives. I can remember nights when we would have a table of 15 of us set up in the middle of the dining room. I can also remember being thrown out of a few Denny’s on more than one occasion too: we were either too loud or never ordered enough to keep a decent bill running.

I salute you Denny’s, for being our kitchen away from home! Denny's doesnt exist where I am now, but whenever I see a "fast food sit down" restaurant I alwasy think of Denny's and what it meant to us.

For a while there, a bunch of the Offmen and some of us girls made a habit of going to Denny's after (and sometimes even before) the Improv. This one waiter from the Denny's in Rolling Meadows (which is sadly no longer there) was named Jason and he put up with so much crap from us. He always made sure to push several tables together to accommodate us all and we usually got rowdy pretty early on. For some reason, throwing things at one another was quite standard, such as those little creamers for coffee. I always felt so bad when we'd leave because Jason would have SUCH a mess to clean up. I always made sure to tip him a little extra. Here's to you Jason—the best damned Denny's waiter ever!

I remember Jason. he was pretty cool for a Denny's waiter. He did indeed put up with a lot of crap from us and he never seemed to be too mad.

Yeah, that was the best part—he was the NICEST guy and even when he had to come by to "settle us down" ('cause I'm sure some of the other patrons were complaining—or at least staring), he always did so in the kindest manor. Maybe that's 'cause we were ALL tipping him well. :)
