In The News......

Pelosi asks Democrat to quit key committee
Louisiana lawmaker says he will not step down from panel

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a letter Wednesday to U.S. Rep. William Jefferson asking him to resign from the House Ways and Means Committee days after FBI agents raided his Capitol Hill office.

But after her request was quickly shot down -- and Jefferson alluded to discrimination -- Pelosi, D-California, crossed the aisle to join the Republican Speaker of the House in condemning the Justice Department for how it handled a search of Jefferson's congressional office.

"In the interest of upholding the high ethical standard of the House Democratic Caucus, I am writing to request your immediate resignation from the Ways and Means Committee," Pelosi wrote to the Jefferson early Wednesday afternoon.

theres a shock, a politician refusing to do what he is asked and of course he claims "discrimination"...

Just to make it fair....he has charges of bribery brought up against him. I guess there has been a big stink about this in the news over the past couple days....

Its just really really hard to believe a politician in today's world.

Article 1 section 6 makes exceptions for treason, breach of peace, and, here's the important one, felony. and it states they cannot be arrested during sessions, nothing about searches.
Seperation of powers? How about checks and balances?
the only reason he was the only representative under investigation asked to step down is because they found 90k freaking dollars in his freezer! that's what you call a smoking gun.
Discrimination? Yeah, poor, oppressed, downtrodden, marginalized 8th term US Congressman. How terrible life must be for you.

a little post script. Jefferson is under no obligation to step down. he hasn't been convicted of anything. pelosi just didn't want a dem convicted while still in the ways and means committee. it seems obvious that would be bad for the party politically.

There's nothing I found that specifically states that Jefferson thinks he was asked to step down because he's black. Obviously this is just pelosi doing damage control. When elections come around she can say that she has clean hands, she suggested that he step down. This helps her as well as the dems as she is the House minority leader. Can't blame her for doing a little CYA move. Of course most other congressman under investigation, Delay,Ney and Moholon all stepped down from legislative committees voluntarily

Love the stormtrooper gif. All this BS about this being a violation of seperation of power is rediculous. This is not the executive branch running roughshod over the rights of legislators. They had a search warrant, issued by a judge, i.e. the judicial branch. The items that were taken from the Congressional office were subpoenaed back in September and still had not been handed over. This is not the abuse of one branch of government. this is checks and balances. The fact that this is causing such a ruckus in congress proves that the 2 parties can come together, even if it is just to cover their own asses.
